Vinyl siding gets sold as “no maintenance,” but if you’ve lived with it for a while, you know the color doesn’t last forever. After enough Carolina summers, the south and west walls fade, the surface turns chalky, and the whole house starts to look older than it is. The good news is that the siding underneath is often still sound. In many cases, painting vinyl siding can bring a faded house back to life without the cost and mess of tearing it off. Here’s how it works, and how SouthEnd Painting & Roofing handles vinyl siding painting for homeowners around Charlotte.
Why Vinyl Siding Fades and Chalks in Charlotte
The color in vinyl siding is built into the plastic. Year after year of strong sun breaks those pigments down, and the walls that take the afternoon sun usually go first. You’ll often spot a “shadow” where a shutter, downspout or light fixture blocked the sun and the original color survived.
Heat, humidity, pollen and summer storms add to the wear. Run your hand across a faded wall. If it comes away with a powdery film, that’s chalking. Fading is mostly cosmetic, so as long as the panels are firmly attached and not cracked or brittle, paint can give the house a fresh, even color again.
Painting vs. Replacing Vinyl Siding
When vinyl looks worn out, a lot of homeowners assume the only fix is new siding. Repainting is worth a look first:
- Lower cost. Painting skips the tear-off, new panels, trim and disposal that come with replacement, so it typically costs less. Your written estimate lets you compare.
- Less waste. Siding that still works stays on the wall instead of going to the landfill.
- New color options. You aren’t stuck with the original factory color, within the color guidance below.
Paint isn’t the answer for siding that is cracked, warped, loose or brittle all over. If that’s what we find, we’ll tell you plainly and talk through other options, including fiber cement siding.
How We Paint Vinyl Siding
1. Inspection and Color Consult
We check the condition of the siding, note any loose or damaged panels, and go over color choices with you before any work starts.
2. A Thorough Wash
Paint only sticks to clean vinyl. We start with residential pressure washing to remove chalk, mildew, pollen and dirt, then let the siding dry completely before we paint.
3. Repairs and Prep
We re-secure loose pieces where we can, re-caulk gaps at trim, windows and doors, and replace rotted wood trim and fascia. Windows, walkways, landscaping and fixtures get covered and protected.
4. Paint With a PVC Additive
This is the step that makes the difference. We use an exterior paint suitable for vinyl and mix in a PVC additive that helps the coating grip the siding and flex as it expands and contracts with the temperature. We apply 2 to 3 coats on all of our painting services for premium protection, and when the surface is in rough shape, that means a primer plus two topcoats. Depending on the job, we use Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, Behr, Valspar or PPG products, and we follow each product’s label for weather limits and dry times.
5. Trim, Doors and Final Walkthrough
Trim, shutters, doors and accents are painted to finish the look, and we walk the house with you at the end. See our exterior house painting page for more on trim, doors, porches and decks.
Choosing a Color for Vinyl Siding
Vinyl moves with heat, and darker colors soak up more of the sun. As general guidance, pick colors the paint maker labels vinyl-safe, and avoid going much darker than the siding’s original color. A much darker shade can heat the panels enough to warp them, especially on sunny walls. Shades close to the original, or lighter, are the safest bet. If you want a bolder look, put the contrast on the shutters, front door and trim.
One more thing to check: some vinyl siding warranties have terms about painting. If your siding may still be under warranty, look at the paperwork or ask the manufacturer before you paint. We’re happy to go over it with you.
