Sherwin-Williams Plum Brown: A Cozy Fall Color for Charlotte Homes

This week we’ve written about three 2027 Colors of the Year, starting with Sherwin-Williams Celery, then Benjamin Moore Webster Green and Valspar Cottage Door. Today’s pick fits the season better. Sherwin-Williams named Plum Brown SW 6272 as its October 2026 Color of the Month. It’s a deep, dusky shade somewhere between eggplant, burgundy and dark chocolate.

Here’s where we’d use it, what to pair it with, and how to paint a color this dark well.

SouthEnd Painting is not affiliated with, certified by or endorsed by Sherwin-Williams. Sherwin-Williams is one of several brands our crews use, along with Benjamin Moore, Behr, Valspar and PPG, and we’re glad to help you pick and apply whichever color you like.

What Plum Brown Looks Like

Sherwin-Williams files Plum Brown in its purple family, but don’t picture a bright purple. Think of a glass of red wine in a dim room, or the skin of a ripe fig. In daylight you’ll see a hint of purple. At night under warm lamps it reads almost like a soft, warm brown-black. Because it’s so deep, a sample on your wall will tell you more than the chip.

Sherwin-Williams lists it for both interior and exterior paint, so it can work inside and out.

Where It Works in a Charlotte Home

Dining rooms

This is the obvious spot, with Thanksgiving and holiday dinners coming up. A plum-brown dining room feels warm and a little formal by candlelight, with cream trim, wood tables and brass fixtures. Plenty of homes in Weddington, Marvin and Waxhaw have a formal dining room that barely gets used, and a deep color gives it a reason to exist.

Powder rooms and small baths

Small rooms are the easiest place to try a dark color. A Plum Brown powder room with a gold mirror and white fixtures feels like a little jewel box. In bathrooms we use a moisture- and mildew-resistant paint so the walls handle steam and wipe clean.

Color-drenched dens and offices

“Color drenching” means painting the walls, trim and sometimes the ceiling one color. In a shade this deep, it makes an office or TV room feel cozy. For a lighter touch, paint just the ceiling Plum Brown over lighter walls.

Built-ins and cabinets

Plum Brown is a rich choice for a bar cabinet, built-ins, a kitchen island or a vanity. Cabinets need cleaning, sanding, a bonding primer and a hard enamel finish, and that prep is what keeps paint from chipping. Our crews handle cabinet painting and finish carpentry, including cabinets, built-ins and trim.

Front doors and shutters

Outside, Plum Brown makes a handsome front door or set of shutters against cream, white or gray siding and next to red brick. One caution: very dark colors soak up heat. On vinyl siding, stick to lighter shades and save deep colors like this for the door. For exterior work, see our Charlotte exterior house painting page.

Pairings: The Velvet Orchard Collection

Sherwin-Williams grouped Plum Brown with four coordinating colors it calls the Velvet Orchard Color Collection:

A few combinations we’d try:

  • Dining room: Plum Brown walls, Shoji White trim and ceiling
  • Open floor plan: Accessible Beige in the main living areas, Plum Brown on one feature room or a fireplace wall
  • Kitchen: Plum Brown island, Shoji White perimeter cabinets
  • Curb appeal: Plum Brown front door, Bohemian Black shutters and light trim

Plum Brown also ties back to this week’s first post: Sherwin-Williams and HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams listed it among the coordinating colors for Celery, so a soft green and a deep plum can live happily in the same house.

Painting a Deep Color the Right Way

Dark colors are less forgiving. They usually need a tinted primer and extra coats to look even, crisp cut-in lines matter more, and touch-ups can show. A lower sheen hides wall flaws, while satin or semi-gloss holds up better on doors and trim.

A Note on Paint Sales

Buying samples or paint yourself? Sherwin-Williams lists a Super Sale at its retail stores from October 16 through October 26, 2026, with 40% off most paints and stains (exclusions apply). That’s Sherwin-Williams’ offer, not a SouthEnd discount, so check their page for the details.

Ready for Plum Brown Before the Holidays?
